3 rules for throwing the perfect Christmas party

It’s that time of year again, the countdown to the party season has officially begun. If you’re thinking about having a festive themed get-together for your friends and family but don’t quite know where to start, don’t panic, help is at hand. To ensure you’re the host with the most, here are three rules for throwing the perfect Christmas party.

Get your decor spot on
When it comes to making your home look its best for the big day, the devil is in the detail. And we’re not just talking about hanging up tinsel and laying out some crackers on the table. To make your decor really stand out, you’ll need to pull out all the stops - think festive garlands, table runners, scented candles and everything in between. Lighting is also key to creating a welcoming atmosphere. As lighting experts Festive Lights point out, the right illumination can help to create a warm, intimate mood, ideal for party events, while drawing attention to important features such as the dining table or Christmas tree. You don’t have to stop at the interior of your home either. For the added wow factor, why not consider lighting up your garden or driveway to make an impression on your guests as they arrive?

Plan, and then plan some more
The key to any successful soirĂ©e is planning, and lots of it. To ensure every little detail has been covered and the event runs as smoothly as possible, it’s important to prepare well in advance. Your first port of call should be to decide what kind of party it is going to be. For example, are you going to have a sit down meal or will it be more of a casual affair with serving platters and snacks? Make a list of all the food, drinks and supplies you’ll need on the day and give yourself at least a week to get everything sorted. As a general rule of thumb, always buy more than you think you’ll need, as it’s far better to have leftovers than hungry or thirsty guests.

Provide entertainment
We’ve all been to a party where everyone is awkwardly standing around clock-watching, right? If you want to avoid your guests booking early taxis home, having some form of entertainment is a must. Whether it’s playing games, exchanging gifts for a secret Santa or having your guests make their own Christmas-themed cocktails, providing activities can really help to amp up your event and get your guests into the party spirit. If you’re struggling to think of entertainment ideas, why not give your party a fun theme? Having everyone turn up in novelty Christmas jumpers, fancy dress or even a formal black tie dress code can make for an interesting talking point, as well as a great photo opportunity.

There’s no denying that being the host can be a tough job, but with a little bit of planning and preparation, there’s no reason why your festive party shouldn’t be a roaring success.
