Yesterday we headed to have lunch at Jamie's Italian Bath. Jamie Oliver is one our favourite chefs, we have a few of his recipe books and we love watching his TV programmes too. Despite it being a 'celebrity' chef' restaurant, it had a very relaxed, rustic feel to it which was lovely, we didn't feel out of place and the menu prices didn't look too bad either.
We were running a little late so Warren dropped me off to run in and get our table while he parked the car and bought Sienna in. I was shown to my table and given a menu to look at, I decided to order a fresh apple juice to try.. it wasn't amazing but as far as apple juices go, it was good. This was actually the only drink we ordered, Sienna shared the apple juice and Warren just drank the water on the table.
When Warren and Sienna joined me shortly after, we got scoping out the menu. The waiter bought over the child's menu for Sienna along with some crayons. We decided to get her the 'Puppy Dog; Delicious herby, organic sausages, grilled & served in a soft sweet roll with tomato relish & baked crinkle-cut wedges'.
There was so much choice on the menu from pasta to salads to good old steak and frites. We went for a couple of starters first; Warren got the 'Crispy squid; With crushed garlic mayo, chopped chilli & lemon' and I got the 'Proscuitto and melon; With mini buffalo mozzarella and basil pesto'.
Both were presented really well and were good sizes; I'd even say mine was maybe a little too much for a starter. Our dishes had a great amount of flavour, the basil pesto was amazing on my dish and definitely added to the whole dish.
We got Sienna's main to be brought out with our starters so she could start eating straight away and not have to wait for us to finish first. It was presented beautifully on a little board with the jar of salad. I thought the portion size was spot on; most of the time we get so much food with a kids meal that she just wastes it. I also loved that it came with salad and that the sausages were organic, it's nice to have a healthier choice for kids.
At first, Sienna wasn't eating much (she was ill and grumpy) and they actually offered to make her something else if she didn't like it which we thought was brilliant. A bit of ketchup did the trick though and she soon ate most of her sausages and bread.
For my main, I got the 'Market superfood salad; Avocado, shaved fennel, candied beets, pulses, Italian sprouting broccoli, creamy cottage cheese, pomegranate, smashed nuts & seeds. Served with a fennel blossom Sicilian harissa' and Warren got a dish from the specials menu that was a Trio of lamb with rustic roasted potatoes and lamb jus.
I must admit when they bought my dish out to me, I thought they had got it wrong as I was expecting more a tradition salad looking dish with a base of salad leaves. However, it was nice to have more substance than just salad leaves and it was delicious. It had a good amount of flavour, the harissa really added a kick to the dish, the avocado was perfectly creamy and ripe and the chicken was cooked perfectly and wasn't dry at all. For a 'salad' I was really impressed.
Warren's trio of lamb was probably the best dish of the meal. He let me try some lamb and it was soo good! It literally melted in your mouth and the flavour of the jus and potatoes was just right. It actually looks quite a small portion in the picture and while it wasn't huge, it was a great portion size, especially for lunch and we were both happy with our choices which is always a good sign!
As Sienna wasn't feeling very well and was so grumpy, we decided not to stay for dessert and just get her home but we will definitely try to go back to try them and maybe some cocktails ;)
Our total bill came to around £57 which was quite fair for 2 courses each, a kids meal and a fresh juice. Overall, we had a great meal, the service was fab, they were very attentive to our/Sienna's needs and the food itself was delicious. We will definitely go back next time we are in or around Bath!
