Our experience of swaddling (or not)..

Swaddling babies is an age-old technique to help babies feel more secure so therefore helping them sleep better. A lot of babies can disturb themselves while sleeping with little jerk movements and swaddling can be great solution for this. Some parents swear by it while others aren't so keen.

In our case with Sienna, it was her that absolutely hated it. She was a little unlike 'normal' babies, she loved to lie and sleep with her arms and legs spread out all over the place and never slept curled up or liked to be 'contained'. We used to call her our little koala bear as she favoured the position she is in (in the photo above). We tried a couple of times to swaddle her and she would scream and scream so in the end we gave up. We were lucky that she actually seemed to sleep really well and rarely woke herself up.

Although we didn't get on with swaddling ourselves, I have still recommended it to a few friends who are having trouble with their babies sleeping as I can see the benefit if done correctly. The lovely brand Blossom have a great blog and they have done a brilliant post on swaddling here including a step by step picture guide on how to swaddle correctly. They also sell the gorgeous Aden and Anais swaddling blankets which you can find on the Essential Baby Layette page.
