Don’t forget to prime
It’s easy to get ahead of ourselves and to avoid or forget about priming. So, to really make the most of the money you’re spending on paint work, it’s worth making sure that you do prime so that your paint can really stick properly and last. You should check whether your surface is oil-based or not, as you’ll need an oil-based primer if it is.

Shiny sheen?
If you think you’re going to need to clean your walls frequently, it’s best to go with a glossier sheen, yet choosing a less glossy option can also benefit you depending on what you’re after. If you need to disguise defects and imperfections, you should head down the route of a matt finish. It’s also useful to be aware that if you’re going to be using a fairly dark colour and want to avoid too much of a shiny effect, you should take it down a level.

Time saving tool
Knowing which brushes to use and how to get the most out of them can be a big help here. For tricky corners, hold a 2-inch angled-sash brush like a pencil as this will help you to control your painting in small areas.
Take a break
If you find yourself needing to take a break, you should! When there’s too much on your plate and need to wait a few days or even a few weeks to carry on, use a plastic bag and an elastic band to wrap up your brush and put it in the fridge. This will prevent it from hardening before you get back to work.
Vaseline works wonders
It turns out that Vaseline is actually more useful than you may already think…
If there are small screws and hinges that you’d like to keep paint-free, paint some Vaseline over the section first, and then when the paint has dried, you’ll be able to wipe it off as much as you need to.
Add some vanilla
We all know that paint fumes can be really irritating when they linger. A solution that may surprise you is vanilla extract. It is a natural deodorizer, so if you thoroughly mix a tablespoon of it into your paint, you’ll be grateful when you’re done!
