When you first get a dog, it will be the most exciting thing in the world and it will also be one of the most stressful. Being responsible for a whole new life can be a little scary at first, but after a while you will realise just how easy it is to keep your dog healthy and happy throughout their lives. If you are a new dog owner and you need a few tips and tricks, you have come to the right place.
Healthy snacks
One of the first things you will need to learn when you get a dog is that you can never overfeed him. It is tempting to give into toes puppy eyes when they stare up at you so lovingly, but you can’t feed your dog too much because they will become overweight. Instead, you can feed your dog healthy snacks when training the, to ensure that they stay a healthy weight and that they will learn the commands you want them to learn. Dogs and watermelon, carrot and pumpkin can be great so make sure that you feed them low fat snacks and this will keep them happy.
Keep them moving
Dogs need lots of exercise. When you get your dog, it is worth doing some research on the breed to see how much exercise they need every single day. For example, of a pug only need 30-40 minutes each day, this can be very different to a husky who needs 3 hours each day. Make sure you get a dog which fits your lifestyle, research their needs and get them moving as much as you can. You can exercise your dog by doing on long walks, and also by playing with them at home in the house or the garden. Making sure that they stay active will reduce the risk of heart issues as well as joint problems.
Give them cuddles
Dogs need love and attention just as much as we do, and they also can suffer from stress and anxiety if they aren’t treated as part of the family. To make sure that your dog stays healthy mentally, make sure that you give them unconditional love and lots of cuddles at the end of the day. The bond you build with your dog is amazing, and you will both benefit from the love that you share. There’s never been a better excuse to cuddle a dog!
Keep them groomed
Keeping your dog healthy and happy also means that you need to wash and groom them often to ensure that their coat stays thick and shiny. You can start off by clipping your dog's nails. And then you can give them a bath with genital shampoo and Lukewarm water. Once you are done with that, let them dry out completely and then brush their hair and clip it if you want to. Keeping your dog groomed is more than just for looks. It reduces the risk of fleas and painful knots which have to be cut out of their hair.
