Summer is well and truly here which means that the countdown to the summer holidays is ON. The summer holidays is a period of time that some parents look forward to and others simply dread – purely for the fact that they’ll worry about keeping the kids entertained for six weeks!
But don’t worry, you won’t have to give up your garden completely; it is possible to have a garden that both you and the kids can enjoy – without breaking the bank! If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor space, then why not make the most of it this summer, and give these kid friendly garden ideas a try?
Lighting
The summer holidays means no getting up for school in the morning! Which means longer evenings spent outside playing with their family and friends. If you want to keep the kids safe and want them to make the most of the long evenings ahead then you’ll need to think about your lighting options. Garden LED light fittings – which are available here – are a great place to start. If you’re thinking of something that’ll blend in easily with your garden layout, then solar powered garden stakes will sit easily inside your flowerbeds, along the garden paths and will illuminate the darker corners of your garden space. They’ll also be kinder to your electricity bill too.
A veggie patch
Just because the kids are out of school, doesn’t mean that they can't learn a thing or two while they’re away for the summer. Why not get them growing their own veg? You won’t even need a large patch of flowerbed or a huge garden space. A simple plant container, some good compost, water, sunshine and a packet of seeds is all you need to get going. The kids can have great fun choosing what they want to grow, and they can grow and nurture their veggies all summer long – they’ll probably enjoy eating them just as much!
Their own blackboard
Let your kids creativity loose this summer by installing their very own blackboard! They can be hidden perfectly in a corner or can be attached to a fence with ease. It’s no mess too and it’ll give the patio a break from all the “artistry” it’s accustomed too…
Container worlds
This one is great if your outdoor space is limited. Get yourself a large gardening container, fill it with soil, or sand, create paths with pebbles from the path or gravel, decorate with moss or little flowers, rocks or twigs; ideal for fairy gardens, dinosaur lands and construction sites alike! Let your children bring their toys to the fun and voila! Their very own play set – and not a toy shop in sight!
Water play
What could be better than getting out the paddling pool on a hot day, or letting the kids run through the sprinklers? Why not create an elevated water tray or table for hours of fun? Just remember to always watch your children closely when water is nearby.
