How to prepare for a winter car journey

Keeping your car in check is an important factor all year round, but as the winter months approach, it’s even more crucial to carry out all of the relevant safety checks. Doing so will prevent any nasty surprises and unnecessary accidents and make sure you’re fully prepared should you find yourself sat on the hard shoulder of a motorway waiting for help to arrive.

Lights

With the dark night’s drawing in, it’s important to make sure that both your front and rear lights are in full working condition. It can be very off putting to oncoming traffic if only one of your lights is working and you will also be at risk of being stopped by the police.

Screen wash

Making sure your screen wash is topped up may not sound very important compared to some of the other car safety checks but think about it - you’re on a long car journey, the weather conditions aren’t the best and you need to clear your windscreen. Not having sufficient screen wash levels will prevent you from having a good view of the road ahead which could hinder your vision and potentially turn out to be fatal.

Battery

Waking up to dark mornings is bad enough, so the last thing you want is to start your journey to work and discover your car won’t start. Cars rely on electrical supply and eventually your vehicle’s battery will start to lose power and there are only so many times you can take a set of jump leads to it. It’s important to regularly check your battery and if you start to see telling signs of power loss then it may be time to buy a new one. There are many retailers who sell car batteries across the UK including Kwik Fit.

MOT & Service

Having an MOT & Service are probably the most important health checks that need to be carried out on your vehicle. If your car is more than 3 years old then it needs an MOT every year and can be carried out at a range of test centres around the UK. As well as an MOT, your car will also need to be serviced annually to make sure everything meets the appropriate safety standards and legal requirements.

The points I’ve mentioned are just some of the checks that need to be carried out on your vehicle. With winter just around the corner and the weather getting colder, it’s important to prepare for car journeys, especially if you have young children. It may be worth keeping blankets in the boot of your car in case you do find yourself waiting for a mechanic to come to your aid, as well as snacks and magazines to keep the kids entertained.
