Your Skin Care Options Guide

Everywhere you turn, there is an advertisement on how to take better care of your skin. So many products claiming they can turn back the clock to make you younger. Others claim they can cover your scars to make them disappear. Stores are flooded with products to remove your unwanted hair. Can these products work as well or better than procedures in a cosmetic clinic or spa? This guide will help you navigate through the nonsense to find products and procedures that will actually handle your needs.

Hair Removal
If you rarely find the need to remove undesirable hair, like the bikini line, products intended for home use will work well. Cold wax strips, depilatory creams, or the standard razor will do the job well enough.

If the need to remove unwanted hair is constant, such as back hair or legs, you should consider laser treatments. Look at how often you are shaving or waxing and how much it is costing you in time and money. Laser treatments last for 3-4 weeks at a time or can be reduced up to 90% with around five subsequent sessions, needing as little as one per year after that.

Tattoo Removal
When you get a tattoo, it's usually for life. Unfortunately, not all tattoo artists are talented and you may find yourself regretting it down the road. There is no home treatment to remove permanent ink on your skin. Cover-up makeup is the only option at home.

Clinics offer laser tattoo removal. Depending on how large and how dark the tattoo, it might take a second session to remove the entire tattoo, but it will be removed in the end.

Cellulite Reduction

Most of us suffer from cellulitis at some point. With awful terms like “cottage cheese thighs”, it is not at all desirable. There are smoothing creams available on the market that claim to tighten and smooth the skin, but do they work? The answer is seldom positive. These creams may smooth the skin slightly, but are far too temporary to be worth it.

Clinics have used aesthetic lasers successfully to reduce cellulite on the hips, thighs, upper arms, and buttocks regions. The lasers heat the skin cells to “melt” the fat pockets and firm the skin. While nothing permanently reduces cellulite beside diet and exercise, lasers can reduce it for extended periods of time.

Wrinkles and sagging skin
For very mild wrinkles, certain topical products can work. They must be anti-aging products in order to  tighten skin or fill in wrinkles, but results are extremely temporary. Ultherapy is a clinical procedure that also works to reduce mild wrinkles in the face, neckline, and jowls areas and results last at least several months.

For mild to moderate wrinkles, laser therapy is a better option that works on most areas of the body. The results last for a year or longer and are immediately noticeable.

For extreme wrinkles and sagging skin, the only option is generally plastic surgery. While it has the most impressive results, it comes at a hefty price. The surgery is expensive and has serious risks associated with it.

Choosing the right treatments
The right treatment depends on you and what kind of results you are seeking. Mild or temporary results may be treated with at home methods, but stronger results will likely require finding the right clinic to help you with your skin care.
