Making the home ready for Autumn!

Now that the summer holidays are finally over, it’s time for all of us to clear up the kid’s mess and turn on our nest-building skills by thinking about how to make our homes a little more autumn-friendly!

I love this time of year as it’s when we can start thinking about getting out those lovely autumn clothes and such concepts apply in the home too. So whether it’s upping the comfort factor by checking out the latest bed sales, or just celebrating the end of summer with a wonderful harvest wreath, here are some of the ways that I’ll be getting into the spirit of autumn!

I always loved harvest festivals at school, and I love to decorate the home with lots of dried flowers and fruits that not only look great, but they also smell lovely too! The soft ochre, russet and golden tones of autumn are always a big hit with me.

And this year I think I’ll take it one step further by giving our front door a good autumn makeover with a fresh lick of weatherproof paint and then seeing if my craft skills are up to par by attempting one of these amazing autumn wreaths - perfect for getting the kids involved in foraging for dried foliage!

Although summer is nice, I’m a big fan of the cool bright days of autumn, and that’s why I’m looking forward to getting out all of those thick wintry blankets again. And it looks like the Highland trend is going to be big news again in 2016, and so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for a good tartan throw for the living room sofa.

And obviously the bedroom will need to be made extra cosy with plenty of warming reassuring touches like candles, rugs and lots of cushions. I can’t remember the last time I updated my bed, so I’ll definitely be checking the Bedstar website as I got my last bed here and autumn is a time when lots of retailers do their end of season sales!

But as the kids get bigger, I’m starting to realise that their possessions are starting to take up more room too. So if I manage to tear myself away from the bed sales, I’ll be seeing if I can update my DIY skills by perhaps putting up a couple of bookshelves in the kid’s room to help keep the area free of clutter and make space for future toys - after all, Christmas isn’t so far away!
