Decorating your home is always a fun and personal experience. Even if you’re not naturally endowed with a strong artistic sense, there are lots of pro’s tips on design, color balance, and home improvement on the Internet for you to try and experiment. No doubt people have been giving you the do’s and don’ts of home décor ideas. But, sometimes you just want to break all the rules. After all, why should your home look the same as everybody else's? To aid you in your rebellion, here are 4 décor ideas you can use for your home:
1. Speak Your Mind with Street Art
What could be more rebellious than graffiti? Street art is making its way into art galleries, and high fashion, but it's still far from the mainstream. If you're searching for an edgy look that screams 'street cred' then it's time to grab a can of spray paint and get creative.
To inspire you, Calgary-based interior designer, Karen Fron, has compiled a page showcasing artists, designers and vendors who have infiltrated street art into the world of home decor. For example, Ames Tiles offers a line of decorative tiles called 'Word Up' that take their design cues from the urban street.
Or, you can simply invite your daughter's friends over and pass around the marking pens. That's exactly what Pamela Bell did. Owner of a penthouse in Manhatten's East Village, Ms. Bell decided her trophy apartment needed a touch of rebellious décor. The gang of kids scribbled graffiti on her muslim sofa, painted over two chairs, and made over a bedroom to give the overall interior a strong attitude.
2. Go Punk!
Brash, brazen, and belligerent, punk rock thumbed its nose at the 1970's establishment and left its filthy fingerprints on just about every subversive subculture that spawned in its wake. If you want to add a rebellious edge to your décor, then maybe it's time to go punk.
The key is to add stylistic touches rather than go whole hog — unless you live in a squat, that is. According to Bazaar Velvet, the look you want is a mix of classic English country-home accented with punk flairs.
The idea is to mock traditional English style by contrasting it with a punk sensibility. This means dark walls, muted woods, and antique furniture offset with garish colors and controversial images. Throw in a Union Jack, and God Save the Queen!
3. Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out
You could make a case that mainstream culture has assimilated the values of the hippie rebellion, but why belabor the point? Hippie fashion still has that counterculture edginess, and besides that, it's fun!
The hippie design ethos embraces coziness and comfort, emphasizing warm colors, natural fabrics and wood finishes. As Fengshui Dana suggests, you can experiment with indoor vines and houseplants in earthy pots. Hang crystals and lanterns, or even a macrame swing chair. Finally, accent a room with a feather garland or crystal mandala to create a compelling visual focus.
4. Mix up Your Styles
Launching your own décor rebellion means you don't have to follow the rules. Feel free to mix and match wood tones or combine furniture from different periods or styles. The chairs around your dining room table don't even need to match, as long as they complement each other.
However, Canadian Home Trends does offer one hard rule: be sure to have a good lighting plan for each room. That's one bad boy you don't want to mess with!
