Even though our family keeps on growing, Warren and I still like to travel. We love taking the girls on day trips and little weekend breaks so that they can see and experience new things.
As Sienna and Aria get older though, I want to be able to take them further abroad. I want to fill their childhoods with fantastic memories, but also teach them about other cultures.
Recently, I’ve been drawn to the idea of taking a family holiday to a big city in Europe – somewhere that’s family-friendly, but with plenty of things to do so that we don’t get bored. For us, the perfect place seems to be Rome! I’ve found that trying to plan a longer family holiday though can be pretty stressful, so I thought I’d give you all a few tips on the best way to go about it.
Start searching early
My top tip for any family, no matter what the destination, is to start searching as early as possible. When looking at hotels in Rome, I wanted to make sure that they would be family-friendly with plenty of facilities for us, but that were also within walking distance to all of the major attractions.
I hate having to take the kids on long journeys as they are still quite long, so it’s comforting to know that the hotel is only a stone’s throw away. Luckily, Rome isn’t the largest of cities, so this wasn’t too difficult to find. However, the prices vary massively, so by searching as far in advance as possible, you’ll get a much better idea of what a real bargain looks like.
Book popular attractions in advance
I’ve been looking at what activities are perfect for families, and from what I’ve found I definitely want to make sure that we don’t miss out! I’d hate to get the kids all excited and then not be able to take them, so you should always look for ways that you can book tickets or secure your place on excursions.
Our family loves their food, so we’re looking at the pizza-making and market tour. We’d also like to make the most of our time in Italy and head to Pompeii, to teach the kids a little more about the history, so we’re looking at booking the day-trip package to the Amalfi coast too. These guided tours with lunch included are perfect for families, as they offer a sense of structure, but you’re not the one that needs to worry about keeping it up!
Aside from this, we’re also really excited to try our first taste of opera! Rome Opera is known for being the best, so we’re planning on visiting the food markets, picking up some delicious treats and heading for the Terme di Caracalla – a beautiful theatre in the open air!
