Do homeschool students get better sleep?

When it comes to learning, getting the appropriate amount of sleep every night is critical.  Lack of sleep can lead to lack of focus and inability to retain information. There is evidence that homeschooled students get better sleep, which leads to better performance.

Waking Up Later

Traditional high schools start around 7:30 AM, meaning that many students need to be up well before then in order to get ready, have breakfast and catch the bus.  In order for a student who needs to wake up at 5:30 AM to get a full eight hours of sleep, they would need to be in bed no later than 9:30 PM, which rarely happens.

Homeschooled students, on the other hand, are usually waking up at about the same time traditional high school starts.  They have less to do to get ready and have much less of a commute.

Flexible Schedules

Along with having to get up earlier, students in traditional school settings are governed by a very strict schedule.  From the time they enter the building, students are ruled by the bell.  They are in one class, the bell rings and it's on to the next class.  There is no time for them to catch their breath. This hurriedness everyday can lead to stress, which can affect quality of sleep.

Online homeschooling gives homeschooled students a much more flexible schedule.  ELearning allows students to work at their own pace, so when they need a break, they can take one.  Therefore, stress is lowered.

Extra Help

When students in traditional school need help, they have limited resources.  Teachers aren't always available after class or school.  The student's schedule can conflict with that of a tutoring center, if there is one nearby.  Therefore, these students may be up late trying to understand their materials on their own.

Homeschooled students have the advantage of the teacher being around all the time.  And with an online homeschooling program like FutureSchool, there is 24/7 access to qualified online tutors, so the student can even more help, allowing them to rest easy at night.

Online homeschooling, such as FutureSchool, allows students to get the necessary sleep they need to learn and perform at their best.
